Channel Islands National Park: A Dream Realized

Every time I visit a National Park, it feels like a dream come true. It’s not just because I’ve made it a personal mission to visit all of the National Parks and NPS units, or because I’m a cancer survivor—though both are true. It’s because these places are profoundly beautiful, and I’m endlessly grateful that they’ve been protected. May that remain our reality for generations—and centuries—to come.

This week, the stars aligned and I finally made it to Channel Islands National Park for the first time. I chose to explore Santa Cruz Island, and it was absolutely incredible.

The ferry ride with Island Packers was a nature-lover’s delight—dolphins, pelicans, seals, and countless birds made appearances along the way. Once on the island, I set out on several hikes, all offering stunning scenic views. My favorite by far was Cavern Point. I loved it so much I hiked it both forward and backward, multiple times, soaking in its beauty from every angle.

After a snack overlooking the ocean—complete with a view of leaping dolphins—I spent the afternoon reading and relaxing on the beach, surrounded by soaring birds and the sounds of the sea.

The ferry ride back was equally magical. We were joined by dozens of playful dolphins, a unique and unforgettable sight found only in the channel—an absolute wildlife wonder.
